Now that big 'I love you' is out of the box, The Big Bang Theory just can't put it back. This episode, a Christmas one where a certain amount of sentimentality is not only allowed by welcomed, left you with little lasting memory other than the warm glow of Sheldon and Amy's growing romance, and just how important it has become to the show's DNA.

The Big Bang Theory usually does really well at holiday episodes, with so much both sadness and familial bonding inherent to occasions such as Christmas and, whereas past holidays consisted of the four guys (and Penny) making the most of their little makeshift unit, now the friendship group has evolved into a proper little family where it doesn't seem at all odd that none of them want to be elsewhere on Christmas Eve.

And so we have Amy planning a Victorian themed party for them all plus Raj's father, while Howard and Leonard try to overcome a mishap at work and Sheldon takes Bernadette to the mall to help him pick the perfect gift for Amy.

The first storyline is more of a framing device, providing the rest of the gang with something they need to get back to, and the actual exchanges between Amy, Penny and Raj's father range from unremarkable to unpleasant. The notion that Raj is struggling with his parents' divorce is one that has a lot of legs, but here it's just used as an awkward side note when he has to deal with Leonard and Howard's bickering at the lab.

Amy's glee at hosting her first Christmas party for the group is endearing, though, as are the games and food she's decided would be fitting for a proper themed holiday get-together. That mention of Raj's Tom Hanks-giving was too enticing not to get a flashback of some kind, however.

And the Howard/Leonard/Raj plot, in which the former two accidentally let a pigeon into a contaminated lab, is probably the weakest part of the episode, as watching three characters argue in between mild jokes is not only something that doesn't belong in an episode this sweet, but something we've seen done a million times before.

On the other hand, there's the Sheldon plot line, which had more heart than most and definitely capitalised on the freedom the writers now have following the prom episode. Sheldon and Amy are now as legitimate a couple as Leonard and Penny or Howard and Bernadette, and with that comes little moments like Sheldon recalling all of the things he enjoys about Amy or both of them realising that making each other happy is as good as Christmas could get.

The moment at the party is a little more saccharine than The Big Bang Theory usually allows itself to get, with the show ordinarily choosing to undercut its more heartfelt moments with a bad joke or cruel jibe. This, though, was left to just exist, which is the reason these characters and their relationships feel so natural at this point.

This year's The Big Bang Theory Christmas episode lived up to past examples, then, even if it was nudging the show's self-imposed limit for sentimentality. Happy holidays
